Hi Jenna
Thanks for your post. If you look at history and health, the ideal time for a woman to get her first period is actually about the age of 16years. The first concern is being put on the pill at an early age. It takes 6-8 years from menarche for our brain and our reproductive organs to 'talk' properly. When you are given the BCP, you do not get a period as such. You experience a withdrawal bleed. You do not ovulate. This means you have the addition of synthetic estrogen, plus an estrogen-progesterone imbalance as to produce normal progesterone levels you need to ovulate. Not a nice combination. The pill also has been shown to increase insulin resistance, which is a common driver in PCOS. The pill may actually increase your risk of developing PCOS.
Congratulations on the lifestyle changes and weight loss. That is such a great effort, and an amazingly important step in overcoming PCOS.
Insulin sensitisers can increase inflammation. This is not ideal. Clomid does increase your risks, and I do not believe you should use this as a first option, although I understand it seems to be recommended without much real consideration.
You are correct, research does shows weight loss of 5 - 10% often induces ovulation, and so improves fertility. However, this is only one factor.
I would recommend you have a preconception time. All women should do this, not just PCOS women. And do not forget, it takes two to tango. Your partner should do this with you. Start with a detox. Toxins not only affect your fertility. Toxins, oxidative stress affect the DNA and acrosome. This will effect his ability to fertilise your egg. You can use supplements to induce ovulation. Addressing stress is a big factor for many women (and their men). Stress suppresses reproductive function. Drink enough pure water. Get enough sleep. One nights bad sleep has been shown to decrease your insulin sensitivity. Take fish oils. This helps with insulin sensitivity as your cell membranes desperately need omega 3s to function optimally, and it's a general antiinflammatory. I talk more about this in my 12 week course (almost completed), but these tips should help.
Goodluck!
